Okay I should probably have posted these ages ago but I just found this site. This is a long story but I'd really appreciate any help I can get!
I am 17 last November I had this mysterious violent stomach pain. It came out of no where when I was going to see a movie with my mom and it was so bad I started getting faint and throwing up. My mom freaked out and took me to a Sentara healthcare center or whatever they call it (not a hospital) because my mom was freaking out and it was the closest place. There was literally no one in the waiting room except a nurse eating a salad. My mom asked if they could treat me and that I was in severe pain and she didn't know what it was. They looked me over (but not before getting my mom's credit card we don't have insurance except a really high deductible that wouldn't apply here) made me take a urine test, asked me a few questions, gave me a pelvic exam (my mom thought it might be female troubles but I don't think it was looking back), and then gave me an injection for the pain. They never gave me any scans or tests and my mom asked them if it was going to be expensive and they said no not more than a usual doctors visit.
They never gave me any other tests or figured out what was wrong with me but after the shot I felt better so we went home. They gave me a prescription for some pain pills and that was the end of it. About a month later my parents got a bill from the doctor for less than $200 dollars. They thought that was reasonable and paid it. Later we got another bill for $700 without telling us what it was for. Nothing I did or used could possibly have cost that much and we all thought it was ridiculous. My mom called them and said they needed to tell her what it was for. They said they didn't know and told her she should just pay it. My parents refused because they thought it was unreasonable and they shouldn't be able to charge us for something without telling us what it's for or why we have to pay it. My mom asked while we were there if it would be expensive and they said no. Later she got a bill from the doctor and thought it was done. We don't know what this $700 is for and both my parents called and asked repeatedly why they were charging us this and they wouldn't tell us. My mom even tried to go down to their main office and they wouldn't talk to her.
Is this legal? They're taking us to small claims court tomorrow for the money so I need to know if the charges are legal and if not what law can we bring up to prove we shouldn't have to pay it? My mom and I have to go to court and she has no idea what to do she knows less about the law than I do. I've heard they sometimes just add random charges to steal from your insurance company but we don't have insurance and though we're not really poor my parents don't want to pay $700 for no reason. Is this charge legal and if not what can we do? What do we tell the judge who wants to know why we can't pay? My parents don't want to pay for a lawyer (their decision I think it would be worth it but I think they think $700 is too much money to pay a lawyer to keep but not enough money to pay for a lawyer to not have to pay if that makes sense).
What do we do? I know I'm a n00b and my post is really long but we really need help from someone who knows the law.
