Default Crossing the street listening to an ipod

You could get clipped $100 for walking, jogging or cycling across a New York street with an iPod plugged into your ears under a new law proposed by a state senator from Brooklyn.

This law was originated because there was someone who was killed by a bus when he stepped out into traffic listeining to his ipod.

Guess it is for safety, but kinda crazy.

Wow! I would owe a lot of money by now. I see the point, though. I'm pretty absent minded as it is, and worse when I'm listening to music. My mind just floats away.

Come to think of it, I've been hit by a car while riding a bike. I wonder if I was listening to my ipod then?

It does make sense to me. If you wear your ipod then you can not hear a car that might hunk the horn at you.

It does make alot of sense when you think about it. If they really wanted to write some tickets, just go to the high school after school and see how many kids are wearing the ipods while walking in the streets.

You know,in all reality and common sence, you should look before you step into a street. Does this pertain to a deaf person also,if their humming to theirself.

I can see the reasoning behind it, but how is it going to be monitored? If someone cannot hear the heavy New York traffic, then how are they going to hear a police officer trying to stop them?

It does sound crazy. I mean, even if that person has an iPod on his ears while crossing the street, he or she should have looked at the road first or looked at the stop light and walk light.

Default agree - fine the ipod wearer

I don't believe they should outlaw crossing while wearing an Ipod. They ought to state in the motor vehicle codes that if someone is in the street unlawfully and is distracted by their own equipment, then they can not sue a driver who might run into them for damages.

I.e. If you are talking, texting, or listening to music and not paying attention (being distracted), anything that might happen to you is possibly your own fault.

Drivers have enough to look for with children running unattended by their guardians and the mentally incapacitated by sickness or choice.

If it is against the law to listen to an mp3 player while crossing the street. Then by that logic, the deaf or any handicapped should also be banned from crossing the street.

I see this as a violation of your rights.

Grouping handicapped in with people who choose to impair their hearing is not fair. As a driver I know to watch for handicapped persons and children. What I do not need is persons creating additional hazards and expecting me to watch for them too.

I think what I mean is that there are plenty of dumb things that you could be doing in a street. I think its discrimination because it should be the responsibility of anyone to be paying attention while on public streets.

Edit: I conede. I just read the original post and I agree with what you are saying.
