Hello all.
I just joined and am hoping that someone here can give me some guidance. I am an older lady in financial distress, and I must find work. Failing to find work in this Oregon town I joined a program that helps seniors find jobs. It pays minimum wage to the senior and pays for 20 hours per week. I started the program in early October of 2012 and was told they would put me in a thrift store. I declined due to health problems, but I am trim and fit and in overall good health. But that particular job would impact certain problems. I have a fairly recent AA degree, computer and office skills. Because nothing seemed to be happening with the program, I asked my worker if I could look for a job [thru the program] on my own. He said yes. Well I sold the program and myself to a government agency that needed help in their office. They paid for finger printing for a background check, and I paid for transportation. I pay someone to drive me everywhere as I do not drive. I told my worker at the jobs program about the job, and he was not happy, but didn't put up any barriers at that time. My boss said she would call him. The job is perfect, the chemistry with the boss and others is good, so on. I feel I could learn their proceedures and one day work for them, if not here, than somewhere else as they are federal. Well, the boss told me to come to work this Monday, and called my worker at the jobs program to get my time sheets. She said he didn't call back till late Thursday, and she called me Friday morning to say that they wouldn't pay for me to work. She said he said I needed to go to training, some weekly hour thing. This is all news to me, and he has had a month or longer to schedule this and has never done so. I called him after hanging
up with the boss, and he said nothing about training, just that I was on a waiting list. I said that is the first I'd heard of that. Yet he'd wanted me to go to work at a thrift store months ago.
So now I have no job, nothing. Can anyone suggest what I can do to save my job?
Thanks very much, and sorry it is so long. [I should mention that I have had to spend money on transportation to and from the office to go in and sign documents for the background checks, so on, for work clothes and hair and shoes and other preparations. I am out a couple hundred.] I so wanted this job, it seemed the answer to everything.
