false reference caused loss of rental income

I rented to a bad tenant. First, and only check bounced. He was evicted and I have two judgments against him. He is also now wanted for a Felony bad check related to the rental. The Question is: His reference checked out but I later found out that it was his mother who is remarried with a different last name and she was never his landlord. Can I hold her liable for lost rent and damages to the property and did she break any laws bearing false reference? This is in Charlotte, NC.

You can try but you will not win. You must prove that she knew and intended to mislead you. That will be very difficult. I wold not waste my time on it. Try to get the Prosecutor to include your money losses in the guy's probation terms and require him to pay you everything you are owed as part of his probation. Good luck.
