Can collection agencies do this

I'm in the military and coincidently traveling around the world I forgot to pay a credit card off. So from 2005 to Sept 2008 a credit card went from $400 to $1074.26. A credit collection bought contract in Sept 2008 and now in March is telling me to pay $2700. Is this legal, can the collectors almost triple the fee within 6 months without prior notification. I'm stationed in New York.

Good question and it burns me to see how America's best is being abused. In NY it is legal to add horrendous fees on collection accounts. You may have a legal defense under the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act of 1940 as amended. Check with your military jag officer and get some legal help. Judges and juries woun't like the predatory practice. Best wishes and thanks for what you do for the USA.
