Is it illegal to buy a fake id?

My friend wants to buy a fake id from this guy he was told to email on a anonymous posting site. The guy lives in new york and my friend emaild him. He is willing to make a fake pennsylvania drivers license. All he needs is for my friend to email him any DOB, any adress, any name and a picture of him. He will then be put on a waiting list and when it is ready the guy will email him back to meet up and exchange the id for money. My friend in ni way is going to use the id for illegal behaviour but is it possible this is a cop and can he be arrested for simply attempting to buy the id or must he use it illegaly?

It's probably illegal. I don't know if your friend lives in NY or PA, but in NY it is probably Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument. It can be a felony if the ID purports to be a lawful, state generated document. why would "your friend" buy a fake id or anything for that matter off someone that he never met and doesn't know if he's legit? Did he ask for a credit card number and social security number as well?

It is definitely illegal, and I know you are subject to a pretty heft fine if caught making / distributing a fake ID.

I don't know if owning one is illegal but I know trying to use it somewhere is. This guy is asking for his DOB, address, name and picture. Okay, why doesn't he just give the guy his bank account numbers and SSN while he's at it. This guy could use the info to set up a fake id for himself or someone else (besides your friend)!

Yup, it's illegal. Falsification of Identification. Possessing a fake ID is a FELONY, making a fake ID is a FELONY.

Purchasing a fake DRIVER'S LICENSE is illegal because a driver's license grants privileges that can only be sanctioned by the State of Pennsylvania. Whether the license is actually used, is not at issue in this case. It is the issuing agent that makes the purchase illegal. This is likely a State Police Sting. Vfielder is correct. Purchase and/or possession of.....is a felony.

I think laws to punish the use of fake IDs in every state is vary. For example: If someone found guilty of using a fake ID to buy alcohol in New York, then he/she will be fined up to $100 for a first violation and/or ordered to perform up to 30 hours of community service.

Yes it is illegal to buy a fake ID. It is also illegal to make a fake ID for someone. Why would your friend want this ID it it was not for something illegal. No one purchases a fake license for legal reasons.
