Is it illegal to post someone else's personal information online? By personal info, I mean:
*Full name
*Telephone number
*Home address
*email address
*work address/phone number
*date of birth
Does it matter where online I post it? Facebook, Myspace, Craigslist, forums, YouTube?
Does it matter how you obtained the information? Ex., my boss giving me her cell phone number, in case of emergencies, willingly.
For example, let's say you're writing a review for a local business. A business you used to work for. And your review is a negative one, and partially untrue:
"Review for Meaty Meats Deli, 1234 Avenue Whatever, NY, NY 00000, phone 212-111-1111.
'DON'T go to this deli! The store is dirty; it looks as though they haven't cleaned the place in years. The meat quality is poor, and some meat looks old, dry and crusty, the fish is covered in a layer of slime, and the steaks and roasts are obviously rancid, growing mold, and attracting flies. I ordered a roast beef sandwich, and the roast beef had an off smell, and I actually found a dead housefly in my sandwich. When I complained to the manager, William Wilson, 1234 Avenue Ave., apt. 12 NY, NY 00000, phone (212) 111-1111, he refused to refund my money when I asked. When I insisted, he threatened to call the police if I didn't leave the deli immediately. I recommend avoiding this place if you don't want to get sick from eating rancid, old meat.'"
So, could a bitter former employee post anonymous, negative, false reviews of their previous employer, including their former supervisor's full name, cell phone number, and/or home address on a business review website, legally? If it's illegal, could I be sued by the company?
