Hi i am a hispanic latina from NYC... back in August i responded to an ad online for a job as a receptionist. On the day of my interview i was asked what my nationality was, is this an appropriate question to ask or is it even legal??? Now since I've been hired their has been remarks made such as "All Puerto Rican women are whores", "oh you sound so puerto rican", "why are you spanish people so loud?"... clearly it makes me uncomfortable but i dont know how to handle this in a professional manner.... Also on day of hire i was told i would recieve an evaluation for a raise on my third month employeed, i was off for 5 days due to the flu. I returned to work the day after my evaluation date, on this day i recieved a write up for taking so many days off, i refused to sign the write up because i had valid reason for not coming in. At my evaluation i was told i was not getting a raise!!! could this be coincidental???? i've since then been over worked and getting written up for non sense seems like even when i make human errors i'm being penalized for it and no one eles in the office does!!! and oh let me not leave out the nepotism that goes on!!! i am forced to do medical assistant duties and i am not certified no one in that office is.... please help me i know i wrote alot but i am clearly overwhelmed by this situation!!!!!
Most applications have a space for you to put down your nationality or race. This isn't illegal. A company that bases it's decision on whether to hire you on that alone is. It sounds like this office is a crappy place to work. I'd be looking for another job. Just my dos centavos!
