legalities on viewing police reports

Wondering if someone could enlighten me on what the legalities are on what can and cannot be viewed publicly? Scenario: Parent of young adult child wants to view the file on their childs death which is being claimed a suicide and is being told she cannot view the records!! I thought the only thing that held to the confidentiality rules were those involving mental health or medical, but would that be void after death if you are next of kin?

Public viewing of police reports depend on a number of factors. 1) Type of case. Auto accidents are almost instantly public. Criminal cases might not be accessible until after a case is over. 2) State laws, some states are more open then others. 3) Relationship to investigation. Are you a witness, victim, defendant, journalist, etc? 4) Status of those in the case, such as minors.

Please note there is usually a processing fee to purchase a police report.

As to the case you described, I don't see why parents would be denied a report on their child's death unless the case is still considered ongoing.
