it is the start of another school year. our school system is apparently under some budget crunch and says they were "forced" to cut 20 days from the school calander making for a 160 day school year instead of the regular 180. the hours have not been lengthened to make up for the days missed. this leaves me with a couple questions because i cant get a straight answer from them:

1. doesn't Virginia state law mandate 180 day school year?

also,
i received a flier from our sons science teacher. it said that she will be holding "study trips" on the days that have been cut and we are required to shuffle the kids back and forth since there will be no bus transportation.

is that legal? and can i say no? i really cant take the time off of work to keep shuffling the kids back and forth. neither can my husband, if we do we'll have to find new jobs as we'll certainly be fired for asking for all that time off, and in this economy who can afford that?

this isnt related but i have another question about all the fees the "public" school charges. besides all the supplies (about $75-100 per child) they want about $40-60 in FEES (regular locker, gym locker, agenda, special gym clothes, thumb drives, printer ink...etc etc)
i think as taxpayers and homeowners we would have already paid for most these items. they also say if you dont pay the fees, the child is prohibited from moving on to the next grade level even if his grades are good. is THAT legal?

Can a police officer drive down a non state maintained road without permission or probable cause? Can they only respond to calls? I ask because I live down a private road that isn't an easement, but rather has about a dozen house on it. There is a "No Trespassing Private Road" sign mounted just below the speed limit sign.
