Is there anything I can do about this?
My father died on 23March2013. I called on 14May2013 and insisted on talking to my dad and wouldn't be put off. My stepmother told me he was dead. I asked her why she didn't tell me sooner, she said she was under no obligation to notify anyone, although I found out later that my half brother-her son- was there. I asked how he died she said it was none of my business. He was 83 years old so his death was not totally unexpended. I asked where he was buried and she said the V.A. handled it. I said OK, I can find his grave through them she said no she had him buried, then she said she was moving the ashes anyway. So I have no idea where he is but I think he's with the V.A. he was a Korean war vet. I then asked if there was any thing I could do to help her settle his affairs or with Probate or anything. She said there was no probate and no will. I thought this odd but, again, OK, her decision. I told her I would call the rest of my brothers and sisters and tell them and I mentioned my half sister she told me "too late" she died in April. I was very close to her and was more upset about this news. I asked her if she at least told my dads sister and she said "too late" she died March 3rd. Now I'm in shock. 3 close family members dead. Both my dad and her had told me they were getting divorced and were legally separated. So I did some checking and 14 months ago before the divorce went thru he was put in the hospital with Alziemers. I'm still waiting for a copy of that to see what the terms of it are. My dad didn't have much- an old rundown house in a bad part of Kansas City, a couple of old Harleys, that sort of thing, maybe 25 or 30 grand in the bank. Now I know it sounds petty but we are so mad about the way we were treated that we decided to open a trust to get an accounting, that will depend on the legal separation order and what it says. Is there anything else we could do? Is this just so petty we should just walk away. I am 61 years old, Viet Nam veteran, and retired with 36 years at the U.S. Post Office and I have never heard of such a mean thing being done. Thank you for reading this, sorry about such a long rant.
