Overdraft charges

Is it legal in CA to charge multiple overdraft penalties for a series of small debit purchaces? I am a student and did not realise how low my account was, I purchased a sandwich from a vending machine, a soda from another, and a bag of chips from another. My bank is now chargeing me $35.00 for each purchase! Is there any way to fight this?

this happens to me all the time. i have tdbank in new hampshire.
my bank also charges me overdrafts for "pending" items.
(like my payroll deposit which is usually held for 24 hours - excessive?)
is this legal??

Unfortunately. Yes, its totally legal. The bank although can do without charging you, they stand to lose alot of money. This is one way they make money for their share holders. It is your responsebility to insure you have enough funds in the bank no matter how small of a charge.
