I am constantly amazed to see police officers acting as security for liquor stores and grocery stores. Most of the time I recognize their faces because they aren't wearing their police department unifrom.

Is it legal for them to do this?

I think it would be a conflict of interest. The police officer would have greater reason to protect the place generating his second pay check, than protecting the elderly from muggers.

Is it legal for police officers to work a second job, as security?

It is totally illegal for a police men to work a second job. They can be suspended without pay or given written reprimands for working at part time security jobs while the department believed they were still on duty

I would think this depends on whether or not it is outlined in their employment handbook.

I know I can take a second job (I'm an accountant)- but it cannot be with any place that competes with my job.

I would think that security is too close to police work.

Obviously the could not do this work whilst on duty as a cop but I believe that they can do this type of work once they are off duty.
