I have a friend who was told he had to purchase a second airline ticket because he was over 350 lbs. I know that in Canada this is no longer legal. Does anyone know if it is legal within the united states? I can't seem to find anything on the web concerning this issue.

If he is not able to fit in a regular seat then I can imagine that he does have to purchase a second seat. It is also extremely uncomfortable for the person sitting next to such a large person.
