Every once in a while I see kids sitting in the back of pick up trucks as they drive through the neighborhood.

Since the trucks aren't usually going too fast it doesn't seem all that dangerous, but I saw a bunch of kids in the bed of a pick up truck on the highway! The kids didn't appear old enough to be teens.

Is it legal to allow young kids to ride in the back of a moving pick up truck on the highway?

Around Twenty one states prohibit children of varying ages (from 8 to 18) from riding in a cargo area, also with some exceptions.

Exceptions often include parades, agricultural workers, if the bed is completely enclosed, hunters, and emergency situations.

This depends on the state you live in. Here in my state it's illegal and unsafe. There have been many deaths because the truck got into an accident and the kids got thrown out- or the truck flipped over on them.

We all did it as kids- I rode in the back many times. After softball games, in the summer, etc.

I let my daughter ride in the back after a couple of softball games this year too.

It is indeed illegal in my states and in many countries around the world. Don't the people driving these vehicles worry about the kids in the back?
